Im always surprised when a member of my generation confesses to a childhood fear of nuclear war. I was aware of that possibility, of course, and I took part in those silly duck and cover drills early in elementary school, but I never worried about the prospect, and it certainly was not a formative fear that gave me nightmares, shaped me psychologically, or influenced my worldview in any meaningful way. However, I am increasingly aware that several of my contemporaries were haunted by the idea of the bomb and impacted by its existence in genuine ways. Accordingly, Im curious which outlook is the norm, and which is the exception. If youre between the ages of, say, 35 and 55, let me know . . . when you were a kid, were you truly terrified by the prospect that nuclear war actually might occur?
