Im angry about hatred of and violence against women, but I think the people complaining about restorative justice have not had experience with the actual justice system. The one that cross-examines victims, calls them liars, and damns them for pretty well all their choices. An anonymous complaints system cannot happen without wide-sweeping and fundamental changes to the laws in our country - laws which state that people have a right to know the case against them, a right to defend themselves. Those laws will take years to change, if there is any heart to change them. I do not think that heart is there. Instead, what Dalhousie has come up with is a way for the women to express how they felt as a result of this criminal behaviour and (perhaps) educate the men involved. Hopefully, the men will change their behaviour. More importantly, the women will not be revictimized by a harsh, lengthy and exceedingly stressful justice system. Frankly, I think our justice system is broken as far as violence against women is concerned and we need to think of new ways to change this behaviour so that everyone is safer.
