Im as angered as anyone about the way the Ebola patient was - TopicsExpress

Im as angered as anyone about the way the Ebola patient was initially handled. Because of the incubation period and air travel, Ive always thought it was inevitable that wed get a case in the U.S. from someone infected while in Africa, probably several. But I also thought that anyone who went to the hospital sick and stating theyd been to Africa lately would get immediate attention and isolated. I left out an important variable. Human error. Grade D-. Hopefully this will be a lesson learned. Anyway, nothing we knew about ebola has changed. and following this patients contacts will be interesting. If someone gets infected who could have not had contact with the persons bodily fluids while the person was showing symptoms, that puts a whole new monkey-wrench in the system. But, this thing about it being airborne now is just not true. True, if an infected person with symptoms coughs or sneezed directly in your face, youre at risk. But thats not airborne. Thats direct contact with bodily fluids. Although its theoretically possible it could become transmitted through droplets floating in the air, it would be the first virus ever that I know of, that went from only fluid transmission from human to human, to airborne human to human. Yes, stranger things has happened and we must remain vigilant, but theres no evidence it has. I guess hiv could theoretically become airborne, but if ebola was airborne right now, as some claim, there would be millions of cases right now instead of thousands. Heres a couple of interesting links scientificamerican/article/fact-or-fiction-the-ebola-virus-will-go-airborne/ scientificamerican/article/fact-or-fiction-the-ebola-virus-will-go-airborne/ And someone mentions the study that shows proof its already airborne, heres a followup the the study alluded to https://sciencenews.org/article/airborne-transmission-ebola-unlikely-monkey-study-shows
