Im attaching a short trailer for anyone who didnt had a chance to attend December 8 The Essence of Life/Esencja życia, a documentary about the life and work of prominent geneticist Waclaw Szybalski, Professor Emeritus of oncology at UW-Madison, and long-time Polish Heritage Club member. (Im not sure how long the trailer will be available for viewing) creeca.wisc.edu/images/events/posters/Fall%202014/The%20Essence%20of%20Life%20trailer.mp4 The meeting generated great reviews, and many attendees found it documentary to be enjoyable- fun to watch and they learned about his many scientific discoveries. One of our active and passionate members who attended the event wrote an open letter to Professor Szymbalski. An Open Letter to Professor Waclaw Szybalski: During the questions and answers after the December 8 premier of The Essence of Life, you shared how you helped gather intelligence on the location and layout of one of the extermination camps. That information was smuggled out to the Allies with a plea to bomb the camps and their rail lines. I was saddened when you said you felt as you had failed because the Allies did not use the information to bomb it. On a map of the range of Allied bombers, I have added the location of most of the death camps. The death camps were beyond the range of Allied bombers. During and after WWII, Poles should have been told that the Allies did not have the capacity to bomb the death camps. That people such as you were not told adds to the burden of guilt some carry about the Holocaust. Many others failed the victims of the death camps. In 1939, the U.S., Britain, and France failed when they did not immediately come to the defense of Poland. In 1939, the Soviet Union failed when it allied with the Nazis and attacked Poland. The Nazi’s and Soviet’s conquests of Poland placed most of the victims of the Holocaust almost completely beyond the reach of rescue by military action. After 1939, about their only hope was for the Allies to militarily defeat the Nazis as quickly as possible. At great personal risk you succeeded in gathering intelligence on the Holocaust and sharing that with the world. Professor Szybalski, you did not fail. Yours, Leonard H. Cizewski
