Im back...for now. Thank you all for your good wishes. But... Reflections on being in hospital for six days. Into Aberdeen Royal Infirmary last Sunday all set for neck Op. Late night Sunday student doc comes round detects Heart Murmur, does ECG twice. Awake at 6 Monday gown on, anti-embolism socks on - all set for chop at 8.30. Anaethetist turns up to tell me prob with the ECG - High Blood Pressure. Checks with cardiac people and no-go. Next day referal to Cardiac people, scan of heart says problem with Aortic Valve. Blood pressure way too high. If theyd operated I might have croaked! So, Op cancelled in favour of getting the heart prob dealt with, good job they caught it cause Id no idea. So, it turns out I have Stenosis, i.e. calcification of the Aortic valve which is responsible for letting the blood out of my heart into my body. The High Blood Pressure is because the valve is stiff. I asked why it happens and it turns out to be Luck of the draw. So, heart before neck. Next step, Angiogram to determine if by-pass work is required in addition to the valve op. Back home today Im pleased to say, so obviously not life and death, have to take it easy till work done. First Ward full of poor lads who were either asleep or a bit gaga for various reasons - poor buggers. Second ward me and one other who wouldnt shut up. Third ward - a big one with four guys in it who would have had to shout to communicate. This morning. Doc in charge of ward and trainee docs on ward round. I think they must have a Docs outfitters! They ALL wore Chinos, checked shirts, sleeves rolled up to the elbows and pointy toed shoes! It was like Mother Duck and her ducklings, found it very difficult to keep my face straight. The staff were absolutely excellent, I had been offered a place in a private hospital in Glasgow who turned me down in the end, presumably for financial reasons (ratbags) long live the NHS! It must be defended.
