Im becoming increasingly disenchanted with social media. Dont get me wrong, it can be an invaluable tool for keeping in touch with people, or spreading a message. There are people that make fantastic use of it for a variety of good purposes. But for the most part, its just a massive time sink, a mixture of narcissism, ego, anger and frivolity. Most of the people that think they are doing something useful with social media are deluding themselves. Im not excluding myself from this indictment. I too easily allow myself to be distracted by a myriad of social media diversions, and spend far too much time and energy tiling at windmills. That time could be better spent on much more productive endeavors. I used to think of it as an outlet for my pent of frustrations, where I could commiserate with like-minded people. Now, I find it more of the source of my frustrations, and the root instigator of my anger and fear. For this reason, Im seriously contemplating deleting all of my social media accounts. Or at least, most of them, and substantially limiting the ones that I keep, both in who I associate with, and how much time I associate with social media. But for now at least, I need a break.
