Im concerned about Ebola. Im more concerned about how little we are doing to prepare for Ebola. As a friend said to me yesterday, it is not by the Grace of God, nor because Ghanaians are so smart, that there are yet no reported cases of Ebola in this country. It is sheer luck. Ebola is coming and we need to be prepared. Luck has granted us a window of opportunity to learn from the experiences of others, yet the ears of the Ministry of Health, and government, are seemingly closed. You should see the kind of public messages they have. AVOID CONTACT WITH THE BODY FLUIDS OF A PERSON SHOWING THE SYMPTOMS OF EBOLA. IF ITS NECESSARY TO TOUCH THEM, PROTECT YOURSELF BY USING GLOVES, GOGGLES AND MASKS. Where, I ask, does a villager in the northern region access gloves, goggles and masks? And what does he know about the symptoms of Ebola? We should have dozens of teams out in the rural areas educating and sensitizing people - especially traditional leaders - about Ebola. Vans showing movies against a wall. And the cities too. People need practical coping guidance. People need information in a form that they understand. If we were paying more attention to the challenges facing countries with the outbreak, we would be putting out messages preparing us for a ban on funerals for those who die from Ebola. Can you imagine, given what we do with the dead? This time round people have to sacrifice custom and tradition; should Ebola come. This message hit me below the belt: DO NOT EAT FOOD PARTLY EATEN BY INFECTED ANIMALS SUCH AS BATS AND MONKEYS. People finishing off food thats partly eaten by animals and not the other way round. Oh dear!
