Im confused about NJ Question 1. While it does attempt to address the problem with people who are unable to make bail, it also changes the NJ constitution to allow a judge to jail someone without bail until trial if they are deemed to be violent or a flight risk. That is incarceration without conviction. As far as I can see it is several big steps down a slippery slope. We must fix our bail system. It is wrong to have someone spend 10 months on average waiting in jail for a trial, but this is NOT the way to do it. The rule is innocent until proven guilty. The way the law is written anyone with a violent past can be held without bail regardless of the current charge. This circumvents trials and provides police with a means of jailing trouble makers. I intend to vote NO unless someone can explain to me what the protections are from abuse of this law.
