Im convinced that the difference between goal attainment/life enrichment, vs failure/misery is impulse control. Simply the ability to think about long term ramification instead of short term gratification. Its a hard lesson. And I have come up wanting in this sphere oh, so often. But as I become more mature it is easier to reflect and ponder before acting. As a child growing up in poverty in downtown Jamaica I had no idea about these concepts. And certainly no idea why I made some choices and not others. How does a child choose the immediate gratification of skulling (Truancy), vs going to school and enduring having no proper shoes, lunch money, and not having the nice text books? I have met so many parents in Kingston, who told me they were not sending their child to school because they have no lunch money. Im aghast at the thinking. I was not exceptional. But I showed up to Holy Family Jnr School on Laws Street and then to Ardenne High without lunch on so many days, it became routine. I went whether my mother had it or not. I did try being a truant with Hubert mothersill Goss, walking through the gullys of Kingston to Lannamans sweet factory. But the day dragged on so long. We had nothing to do but cause trouble. I decided never again. Whats the difference with todays children and their parents. School is not on option.
