Im crowdsourcing a muckraking story about the ideologies of cinema education and rankings. The HOLLYWOOD REPORTERS list of the top 25 film schools was released today. Ithaca College,where I work, was not on it and alums are raging. I think these rankings simply reify the collapse between the borders of transnational capital and higher education. And...the whole idea of FILM SCHOOL seems out of the 1970s in a transmedia transnational universe...Dont shoot me, please, but I think that a college education should be transformative and establish a foundation for critical inquiry, not alumni who direct blockbusters or get into the Venice Film Festival. It should disturb and change people, not place them in industries that are in decline. These lists demonstrate instrumentality and anti-intellectualism. So what really matters in making a program significiant and transformative? Lets ignore the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER and its lazy reporters and make our own list with our criteria!
