Im crowdsourcing my 2014 ND ballot measure votes. ND friends, help me out, tell me where Im going astray. Measure 1: Declares in the state constitution that life begins at conception. Im voting NO. Not gonna change my mind on this one, but feel free to share your thoughts. Measure 2: Prevents the state from imposing mortgage, sales or transfer taxes on the mortgage or transfer of real property. Im voting YES, tentatively. I dont like the idea of double or triple taxing. Just increase a single tax if there is a need to create new tax revenue. What am I missing? Measure 3: Abolishes elected State Board of Higher Education and replaces it with appointed Commission of Higher Education. As an employee of higher ed in ND Im not supposed to talk about this. I think theres a First Amendment thing there, but Ill err on the side of caution because I really dont care too much any way. How are you voting? Measure 4: Requires measures that have significant fiscal impacts on the state to be voted on at a general election. Dont know too much about the ramifications of this. Sounds good, but will it create unnecessary gridlock? Tentatively YES. What say you? Measure 5: Redirects some of the states oil tax revenues to conservation efforts. Im voting YES. Its not going to pass, but maybe if there is a strong enough minority, Bismarck will have a real conversation about conservation in the next session. How about you? Measure 6: Creates a legal presumption that each parent is a fit parent and entitled to be awarded equal parental rights by a court. Im voting YES. Starting at equal and letting the evidence sway favor is just a better way to do things. What dont I know? Measure 7: Removes requirement that majority ownership in a pharmacy be held by a registered pharmacist. Im voting NO. I think we could be trend-setters for once in the realm of local ownership. Were a growing state. Wal-mart, Rite Aid, CVS, they all want to be here. They can concede majority ownership of the pharmacy. The cost saving evidence hasnt swayed me yet. Am I wrong? Measure 8: Mandates that school classes begin after Labor Day. Doesnt make a difference to me. If the teachers and schools want it, Ill vote YES. How about you? Dont hold back. Like I said, Im crowdsourcing. Your thoughts will help me, and maybe others, be better informed about the measures.
