Im curious of any other of our amputee brethren who has experienced what I did, or if my story is a first... Long story short, is I went to a local UPS store to ship a package to a prosthetic company in Boulder, CO. I was test running a potential climbing prosthetic for upper extremity amputees. All I wanted to do was to return the device. When I was called up from line I placed the package on the scale. The bored looking UPS employee nonchalantly askes, whats in the box? I reply: A prosthetic hand. He turns and looks at me and asks earnestly: Well, whos hand is it?! I note that it was a weird question, but I half laugh and answer: Mine. His eyes grow HUGE, and I see his eyes scan down my body to rest on where my left arm was on the counter. And yes. I am an amputee. He sees my limb and the compression sleeve I was wearing to deal with some pain issues. His eyes grow even bigger (which I didnt think was physically possible, but I stand corrected) and I notice the color draining from his face. He looks back up at me and says very sternly: Sir, UPS cannot legally ship body parts - even if they are your own. I look at him blankly. I now realize he heard a hand and not prosthetic hand when I answered his question. All I could think was: Yup. This would happen to me.
