Im currently reading Eric Metaxas Amazing Grace, a biography of William Wilberforce. Wilberforce was a freedom fighter before it was cool, working in the late 18th century for the abolition of the slave trade in England. Wilberforce is described as single-minded, rabid, unrelenting in his quest for the ending of the oppression of a people. Many of his contemporaries wished that he would just shut up, and allow them to live their lives unhindered by the knowledge of the evil that existed outside their line of sight. Foe and friend alike often wished he could just move along, or wait for a more opportune time. But Wilberforce felt that he had been put on the planet for just such a time in history, and that his mission was freedom. His writing, conversation, his political career--his entire occupation was spent in this pursuit. Eventually, his persistence was rewarded, and the dismantling of the English slave trade was begun. I wonder how a man like Wilberforce might have come across on a medium such as Facebook, and how his friends might have responded. #foodforthought
