Im delighted that Jonathan Larsons spirit-lifting musical Rent is now a success in Cuba. This is the first Broadway musical to be mounted in Cuba in 50 years. And if you click on the link below, you can not only read about it--you can actually see the Cuban cast members (videotaped during a rehearsal) sing the shows anthem, Seasons of Love, in Spanish. The production is being directed by Cuban-American actor Andy Señor Jr., , who was one of the actors who played the role of Angel during Rents long Broadway run. He has had to train actors from scratch to do this show; there is not a Broadway-type musical-theater community in Havana; and putting on Broadway shows, he says, is something of a lost art. But that should not matter much. When Jonathan Larson gave the world Rent, the astonishing cast that opened at the New York Theater Workshop on East Fourth Street (where I saw the show develop, before anyone imagined it might wind up on Broadway) included some terrific newcomers whod never before done musical theater. But they were well chosen and turned into an incredible ensemble. Ive always loved Rent and am glad its doing well in Cuba.
