Im delighted to post this commentary from Secretary Califano. It speaks to the problems that occur when one either doesnt do their research, or ignores the facts under the guise of taking artistic license. I dont believe anyone should purposely alter the truth. To change some minor details for arts sake is mostly acceptable so long as the framework of the incident, or the message remains intact. The comments of one of favorite professors in Ministry school, Dr. Matthew Mangan, about the Bible, comes to mind: Truth is truth. People seem to want to bend and spin the truth to fit their walk with God. Wanting God to look like them, instead of them looking like God. I believe theres a parallel with the movie Selma. The truth about the relationship between Dr. King and President Johnson...and LBJs essential role in passage of the Voting Rights Act, ought not be falsely portrayed. Its a terrible disservice to the great civil rights legacy of Lyndon Johnson.
