Im editing some yearbook pages and on the page showing a collection of student tattoos, it says, They keep track of time. Sometimes things happen and you feel that you need to mark them down. - Scott O’Conner. I never thought of that, which is pretty dense, I guess. In fact, until this very moment, Ive never been able to make sense of why people get tattoos and its bothered me because Ive always been uncomfortable with not being able to understand or articulate something that so many people do. I like being able to empathize and relate to people. I havent even been able to articulate fully why I got my tattoo, though I thought about it for months and dont regret it and never would, even if Lynne and I separated. This quote above explains it. There are some events and people that you just know you would never regret. Tattoos are physical marks which can symbolize what you feel compelled to remember in order to be your best self, kind of like how my neck scar reminds me that Im lucky to be alive. Having a baby, a life-changing operation or an adventure that leaves you with an injury—you dont need to make your own scars to remember these, or to have your body tell your story. But sometimes, something feels so momentous that you want to write its story upon your body, you want it scarred upon you, you want to be branded and loudly tell your story to people without saying a word. Sometimes it doesnt feel right to go through so much pain without any visible indicators. Or to feel so different without a sign to the outside world. You might want to say, Im not the same anymore. Ask me why not. Hear my story.
