Im embarrassed to admit that I was quite a bit ignorant regarding the sentencing phase of Michael Vicks conviction. I know he went to jail and got out early. I thought the sentence was for animal cruelty. I know he has done NOTHING to try to make good for the wrong he has done. But I could never figure out why many of you would say he never served a day for his crime. I now get it. In case Im not the only one who wasnt aware of this, I will share what I was just shocked and outraged to learn. Its just another example of the injustice or lack of justice that the privileged and well to do get away with. Vick served time for promoting gambling across state lines. HOWEVER, when it came to the animal cruelty charges, he served ZILCH! Those charges would have been charged by the state, and would have amounted to 96 years. The calculation comes from 1 yr for each of the 42 dogs that suffered cruelty but did not die, and 6 yr each for the 9 dogs that died from acts of animal cruelty at the hands of Vick himself. These are maximum of course. The Prosecutor offered deal. Plead guilty to dog fighting and well drop all the animal cruelty charges and anything else there may be. And he was given a 3 years suspended service. So the time served had nothing to do with animal cruelty. How the hell does someone get off scott free on 51 charges of animal cruelty? Quite honestly, Ive stopped signing the petitions. I wont even share them. Its a waste of time. Corporations worship the almighty dollar over a living, breathing creatures life, and over morals. For the Jets, its all about winning and subsequently money. These people that defend him and say hes paid the price and served his time in jail well theyre completely clueless to the fact that we do have animal abuse laws on the book, that dog fighting is a form of abuse, disgusting, and illegal. These are the same individuals who would probably turn their head and walk away if the saw something like this happening. At their core, they have no heart and no moral if they can that easy brush it aside and forgive. Because whether or not, in their eyes, he served 18 months for gambling related charges, or dog fighting, he went to jail and thats all that matters because he a great football player to them.
