Im enjoying reading the email that PG&E sent me this morning - TopicsExpress

Im enjoying reading the email that PG&E sent me this morning advising me on how I could make gas safety a priority this winter. This is ironic given that just a couple of years ago an entire neighborhood in San Bruno blew up, reportedly because of inadequate welds on a gas line. The fire burned for more than an hour as PG&E struggled to cut off gas to the line. And most recently, leaked internal emails from PG&E showed that they knew about similar welds on a line running under San Carlos, just down the road, and hadnt advised either the California Public Utilities Commission or the City of San Carlos. Even then, they resisted the request to shut down or reduce the pressure on the line. The CPUC proposed a $2.25 Billion penalty for the San Bruno disaster, but of course this Penalty is really only $300 million dollars that would be paid to the state. The other $1.95 Penalty is money that PG&E would have to pay to upgrade their gas lines and safety infrastructure. I dont really see how this is a penalty, of course, but what do I know, Im just a citizen and customer of PG&E. Im glad to know that PG&E is hovering over my shoulder to make sure Im being careful with gas. I just wish somebody would hover over PG&Es shoulder, who still payed beaucoup bucks to their executives in bonuses even as their gas explosion burned and killed so many people and leveled dozens of homes.
