Im extraordinarily fortunate in that my employer provided 8 weeks maternity leave with each of my pregnancies. That time was amazing, and while yes I used it to bond with my babies, I also used it to start sleeping again, to heal physically, and to turn my brain back on. Thats not a joke- I could not get from one end of a thought to the other for at least a month due to Capital-E-Exhaustion and being completely overwhelmed, and I had easy pregnancies and easy deliveries. In addition to being generous, it was smart on their part to grant that non-mandatory leave. Theres no way I could have produced any valuable work sooner than that. So heres a less snarky article on a topic I feel strongly about, referencing a company that gets it right, including a telling line here to set the stage: The U.S. is the only country in the developed world that doesn’t offer government-mandated paid maternity leave.
