Im fascinated by the idea of place, of being able to trace your origin to an area with definable characteristics (to include language.) For me, its being an Oregonian and a child of the west; more specifically, the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes, though, its hard to pin things down as easily. There are raging arguments, for instance, about just what constitutes the midwest. You can find similar arguments about just where the west begins; is Texas, for instance, a western state — or a southern one? This picture is of a map of all the counties in the United States. If you look at it as a whole, youll notice that there is a definite line of demarcation: the point where county size suddenly and dramatically increases. I submit that this line is where the west starts, as it graphically illustrates the concept of the wide-open space with which the west is most identified (regardless of geography.)
