Im finishing up my section on THE SHOWMEN, a top 1960s R&B teen dance band out of Montgomery County, Maryland. While they never landed a record deal, they did back up THE FANTASTIC JOHNNY C at the Bethesda Youth Center in March 1968. At the time, Johnny C, who was born in SC but had moved to the Philadelphia area in the early 1960s after a stint in the military, was still riding the wave of his huge hit BOOGALOO DOWN BROADWAY (peaked at #7 on Billboards Hot 100 popular music chart on December 23, 1967) when his regional touring somehow landed him in Bethesda. The Showmen did their own set first, then backed up Johnny, who, according to Les Hatley, requested they again perform Showmen tunes, rather than selections from his own album.
