Im getting ready to list my top 10 albums for 2014. Here are a few albums that are worth mentioning that just missed the list: Opeth - Pale Communion was a nice comeback after Opeth scuffled through 2011s Heritage. The metal elements are still absent, but the emotional response is back. Ævangelist - Writhes in the Murk - Ævangelists latest release is another horrific effort. I doubt that this brand of disturbing death metal can be tolerated by most...thats a pretty high compliment. Agalloch - The Official Page - The Serpent and the Sphere ended up as somewhat of a letdown, if Im being honest. Its still a good album, just not as provoking as past efforts. This was never in the Top 10 conversation, but its a decent album... Blood Red Fog On Deaths Wings - I cooled off on the album a lot. I enjoyed it more when I first heard it this summer. It kind of turned into a one song album. The Liberation track is very impressive. As always, there were plenty of things to avoid too... BEHEMOTH! - The Satanist is just your typical output from Behemoth. Im just not a fan of their sterilized brand of death metal...or whatever its suppose to be. Alcest -official- Shelter is the equivalent of watching paint dry. Its a real disappointment, because the previous albums were so vibrant and enveloping. Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun is a collection of songs that sound like they didnt make the One for Sorrow cut. Its a lot of filler. Taake (Official) - Stridens hus....who cares? It doesnt sound like Hoest does. Or maybe I just dont care about what Hoest does? It could go either way... Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestite features ambient music. I see a lot of potential in good ambient music. Wolves in the Throne Room must not be very good at making ambient music.
