Im glad I was able to experience CDA before I graduated; it was quite a weekend. I already raved about our show last night, but the other nine were pretty spectacular as well. Ellingtons rendition of Snow Angels was an intriguing and engaging opening to the festival; Pomperaugs Goodbye, Howard was as hilarious as it was heartbreaking, with some Southern accents that Im pretty sure my dad would have been proud of; Old Saybrooks Twelve Angry Jurors was effective and captivating; Rockvilles student-written Negative Space was a fascinating look at several different types of high school students; Westvilles take on 4 AM was fascinating (the radio guy was AMAZING and definitely deserved his award); Ridgefields student-written Reboot was a hilarious and thought-provoking commentary on technology; Stamfords Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) was so perfect and hilarious that I wouldnt have been surprised if someone had actually died of laughter; Joel Barlows version of Still Life with Iris presented us with a completely new, fascinating, and effective take on the story; and Orville H. Platt finished it all off the right way with the story of Victoria Frankenstein in Frankenstein Unplugged (did anyone else think the monster looked like Edward Scissorhands?). SO--congratulations to ALL recipients of awards, because you all truly deserved them...but especially to our three recipients: Saskia Martinez for her unyielding devotion to creating and assembling our numerous sound cues; Owen Elphick for his brilliant, comical, and poignant portrayal of Nocturnos crochety old Memory Mender, and Lucas McLean for his suave, hilarious, and heartfelt performance as a composer searching for a song. And one more (unofficial) award: I have to acknowledge Maya Shieber and the aforementioned Saskia Martinez, as they are only the latest additions to my ever-expanding list of people who are better at emceeing a concert or event than I am. Words cannot describe your chemistry as co-hosts, or the unyielding wit that you displayed as you began putting a new twist on your act every time you came out. With this in mind, I do hope to see either or both of you continue to take the reins of these kinds of events in the future. And I assure you that I turned off my cell phone EVERY SINGLE TIME. And if youre Liam, Lucas, Abby, or Ally, I greatly look forward to beginning our one-act next week, and commencing the process of allowing Liam to make a monkey out of me (quite literally). And if youre anyone else who was involved in this show...this was my last show with you. Ill miss seeing you at rehearsals, but I do hope youll put in some appearances at events and that Ill see you around the school, in clubs, and before/after rehearsals. And no matter what, STAY IN MY LIFE, cause without you, my life would just be...still.
