Ive cover a lot of executions over the years and every time I think about Gary Gilmore, the Utah killer who wanted to die. Norman Mailer wrote his book Executioners Song about the case. Tommy Lee Jones starred in the movie. After being convicted of robbing and shooting two men in Utah County in the early 70s, Gilmore was given the death penalty. At the time, capital punishment had basically been banned in the United States. But Gary insisted. And after a big legal fight, Gary won and as they sprapped him into a chair so a firing squad could shoot him, Gilmores final words: Lets do it.
