Im going to preface this post with this: i have been and am a die hard NIN fan since I was 14 years old. I have closely followed the band, seeking out tons of rare footage, stories, unreleased tracks, etc. i have traveled to many different states to see them play over the years. Ive used stealth mics to record shows, been involved in forums and have dedicated a LOT of time to NIN. My review of the new NIN track is lackluster at best. As devastated as i was to hear trent say NIN was done for good, i was in some ways elated to see that they would go into retirement while still being ahead as far as the good to mediocre album releases are concerned. This new track ventures back to the mid nineties days where the predominant sounds were electronic. However, the song is so simplistic and such a far cry from the technical genius exhibited by trent in the past. The repetitive 4/4 cadence vocal styling reminds me of a band just trying to find its sound. I was disappointed to hear that the drums and guitars had been mixed so far down as to nearly be inaudible. I will give it that the electronic aspect at points has a nice grit reminiscent of the Broken days. I hate to admit it, but the vocals/lyrics were by far the worst part of the equation. I waited with eager anticipation for the hard hitting verses and guitar tracks to happen, and they never did. The song is lazy. I think they released it half cocked; the track has so much potential which sadly wasnt met. The usual trent anger has faded as he has grown to be a happy person. Good for him, but happy people dont write amazing music. Sad fox :(
