Im going to put out an update on here tonight instead of the site. As much as I try to get away from depending on Facebook as much, it still is a very convenient and easy way to get these updates out to you. Tonight, a mess of ice and snow is moving across the upper Mississippi River Valley and Ohio River Valley. This moisture will continue to move north and east. Places from central and northern Virginia into parts of the Northeast will be getting ice and/or snow. Its difficult for me to discuss all of these regions in a single post, but if youre under a freezing rain or winter weather advisory, just know that travel will likely be getting treacherous. For those across the Southeast, you all really dodged a bullet. That high pressure system moved off the coast just fast enough to allow most of those regions to only get a very cold rain. Temperatures are very borderline, but I dont see temperatures dipping below freezing for most regions across the Southeast tonight. By the way, I consider Virginia to be in the Mid-Atantlic for those of you who have asked me about that lately. Ill keep you updated throughout this week since we have a couple borderline scenarios that could occur for some regions. My biggest article that Im currently working on is the one that will explain why I believe that the last week of January going into February could be a very memorable part of this winter. I could easily be off on my timing, but at this point, I want to give a general timeframe. One last thing: I get a lot of people asking me what I think about what a particular local meteorologist is saying or what a particular Facebook page is saying. The whole point of Firsthand Weather is to give you another source (and hopefully your main source) to get quality weather forecasts. It doesnt make any difference to me what any meteorologist is saying. All I know (and its unfortunate) is that there are far too many meteorologists that flip flop on their forecasts multiple times a day. No weather source will be 100% accurate, and some years will be worse than others. My best advice is to pick a weather source or two that has proven to be more accurate than the rest and stick with it. I do my thing at Firsthand Weather and dont care what anyone else is doing at their local weather station or on their weather sites. -Matthew
