Im going to re-share this, because it needs to be read alongside the admittedly brilliant speech of Daniels. This is from a TV, I repeat, a TV SHOW, proffered as a FICTIONAL TV SHOW! When one of these actors, as themselves, actually get up on a nationally broadcast podium and say these same words, Ill back it. They would really be risking something then, especially now; they might actually push their careers off a cliff. These words, skillfully written, are right on. Yeah. This country is much, much less than merely not-great anymore. But we can dismiss this wonderful speech. Jeff Daniels, a great actor, wont be censured or criticized like his character might; oh no. Jeff Daniels will pick up his very-fat paycheck and go home. Thats neither bad or good. It merely is. While we, on the other hand, will go on living in this cesspool, we, who are the little people, in the sense of having little, struggling to retain the capability of having little. This country, a Capitalist Empire gone nearly berserk with greed and national hubris, has been reshaped for the wealthy, the successful execs. Theyll go on probably to the bitter end when everything collapses. Theyll celebrate the mega-buck shows around the world, and most of them, sealed in their fab modules of uber-wealth, will drive on oblivious, careless, utterly careless...cause, why should they care? Were the ones who will end up paying the bill. I should say, though, there is one very powerful exec who has demonstrated to me personally his sense of caring and empathy. I will not name him, but Ill bet, if he reads this, hell know who I mean. I salute him, and at the same time grieve, for he is among the very, very few.
