Im gonna rant a bit so sorry. Last night we had The Last Supper Club Jam and it was an amazing night......I instigated this about 2 months ago hoping that it would encourage people to maybe wanna come out to a bar where everyone is welcome to have a play,a sing,a dance .... or just let off some steam in a friendly environment. We had visiting musos from outta town,tourists,gypsys,locals and just a beautiful vibe happening on a random wednesday night....there were drums,guitars,bongos,beatbox,tambourine,trumpet....u name it and it was being played by anyone and everyone,and the buzz made you smile!! But in the CBD of Napier now we are lacking places to go out and enjoy with friends......ya know the local bar where we can met our future partners,catch up on the local goss,give the odd tourist a quick rundown on where to go and whats cool and whats not cool in Napier.....or generally have a wine/beer or 2 with friends after work. Not all of us wanna head over the hill.....but chill in town for a change. My point is that these places are integral to any city....and slowly they are disappearing one by one.....and generally speaking the only ones that are surviving are full of gaming machines!! Why you may ask....probably the sad fact is that without the money that comes from these machines...we would be left with almost no bars left in Napier.....and that to me is disheartening.. Having been in Hospitality pretty much all my life I am passionate about people,love providing awesome service,love the industry but.....I am deeply disturbed at this trend and it is not only Napier that this happening but throughout New Zealand.Let me be clear ....I am not anti bars with these machines.... because they are providing much needed employment...but am disappointed at central and local govt...whos agenda seems to be Lets just increase all costs across the board for licensed premises...increase tax on booze(every budget it seems),increase licensing fees,what about footpath charges.....mmmm cant have too many tables out front....oh yeah signboards..and then theres all the other costs...for even playing music etc etc.you know they have a cd player..ok lets charge for those as well.....Bloody hell ....next there will be Toilet tax!!....and guess what will happen then ...youll be putting a $2 coin in a slot to have a shit......hey and when the slot jams....well your shit outa luck!...u get my point.....Its so much harder to survive in this industry than it has ever been before! Its pretty hard for a lot of us to break out with a smile these days and sometimes we like to pop out to the local for a drink and a catch up.but where is the buzz? Another quiz night..e on I wanna be xcited about heading out..Not deflated or like a lot of us Where is there to go...oh nah I think il give it a miss. Anyway u know big ups to Roy at The Cabana for providing the community with a fabulous Live music venue and long may it continue to be supported by us all....and also Ian at Guffle Bar for the Cocktail buzz but we need more options not less! Its important that we as a community continue to support these places.....because without that....they will cease to exist....That is Fact! And to all operators in the industry....please support each other...you need to work together....recommend the place around the corner if you dont have what the customer is looking for....and just because u dont like someone dont tarnish the whole establishment because of it!! Il shut up now lol.....what was all that about??
