Im happy to say that my Friends here are very diverse. Its difficult writing here because I understand there are those who want to live with wonderful nostalgic memories they relate to. At the same time, whilst nothing could stop me attending Alvin Stardusts funeral next week and theres nothing Im enjoying more than listening to and preparing content for the next episode of The History of DJ (the American Rock n Roll DJ legends), I love also being at the birth of modern DJ performers. And, after 31 years of DMC World DJ Championships, (Ive never missed one live final performance being on stage throughout), Im overwhelmed with the talent I witness year after year. Of course some say I cant stand all that scratching and I understand its not everyones cup of tea. Its certainly mine. I know what theyre doing and some make me gasp with admiration. But if you care to watch our new World Champion, the UKs Mr.Switch, I would ask you to concentrate on his hands and the mixer which is his equivalent of a piano or a guitar if you like. Dont watch expecting to hear a nice tune, it just isn;t like that although some of them mix lots of great tracks, others have their own pre-prepared sets dubbed into plates that cost them all their pocket money. Switch was 13 when he gave his soul up to the turntable and vinyl (winning The Battle for World Supremacy which is vinyl only three times when up against the best the world had to send us). To run this year he embraced modern technology and the state of the art as it stands. So wonder not why in just 3 weeks his 6 minute performance has attracted 64,000 views and is undoubtedly heading for the premier league of most viewed DMC clips (Frances C2C have 7 million). Theres no saying where it will all lead. Pioneer DJ have launched their new turntable, something that has been so missing from the scene since Technics Panasonic abandoned the turntable as vinyl too ended its victorious run. Now vinyl is back, turntables are back and DJ technology grows where it will. So forgive me if I promote the amazing young men and women who forsake a social life, annoy their neighbours, worry their parents, as they fall under the grip of mixing and mashing music live in their bedrooms. Right this minute, there are thousands of kids who will be practising and honing their skills readying for their arrival on the scene via next years DMC ONLINE DJ CHAMPIONSHIP which is open to anyone using any method of mixing they choose. Its here where technology will confront old-school vinyl, new kids on the block versus old school devotees. The fans will vote, then the World Champion panel will finally decide who should come out of their bedroom studios to take a bow on stage before the world at the 2015 DMCs.
