Im home after another successful Conference of the Pennsylvania Council of the Blind in Johnstown, PA. Lots of networking took place, as well as information packed seminars and general session. On Saturday, general session included a skit on the state of advocacy by our Advocacy and Governmental Affairs committee; they did a tremendous job and had us awake and laughing at 8:30 AM. Next, we listened to a panel discussion about the challenges and changes of college for students with visual impairments featuring the Education and Employment Committee and 3 college students. Nate, Lizzy, and Donnie covered a variety of topics including Orientation and Mobility on a college campus, independent living, assistive technology, self-advocacy, and time management; we were all impressed with their poise and hope they will stay involved with the organization because they are our future. The rest of the morning included a presentation by Sue Lichtenfels and Tom Reid about a new endeavor PCB is undertaking, a website solely concerning life and Vision loss and the empowerment technology gives with accessing valuable information. We also heard from Don Ciccone who is the manager of operations of the Carnegie of Pittsburghs Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and Susan Banks, Deputy Director of the Carnegie Library with regard to the digital cartridges for NLS audio books. The afternoon was packed with committee reports, resolutions and bylaw changes, and elections of four board members including me (Rosemary Martin). Saturday evening was a lot of fun. We enjoyed good food and good conversation at our banquet, followed by fun competition at team trivia. Our conference ended on Sunday morning with a breakfast and business meeting. If you missed the live stream of the conference, it will be archived and available in a few weeks; Ill post the link then.
