Im impressed with President Obamas executive action tonight. It will help congress realize the urgency of the need for immigration reform. Though Ive always sided with a more forgiving approach to immigration, I didnt become passionate about it until I lived for two years in the border town of Tijuana, Mexico. Almost daily I met people who had been separated from their families because of deportation. Other deportees I met would tell me in perfect English that they were brought to the US early in their lives and had little or no memory of Mexico. They were being placed, essentially, in a foreign country. In nearly all cases, the deportees I met lived in the humblest of situations in an already struggling city. It seemed unlikely for them to ever recover from such a hit. I saw firsthand how deportation ruined lives. Through crossing a border without authorization is illegal, and I dont believe we should condone law breaking, can we really blame those who seek any and every opportunity to make a better life for their families? Seeing as many opponents of the Presidents actions consider themselves religious, heres a passage from the Bible that rang true to me: Leviticus 19:33-34 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself...
