Im in the midst of doing a analysis of every toll bridge on an interstate highway (there are plenty of others too). Im trying to figure out the relationship between the cost of the bridge, its traffic, its financial structure, and the ultimate toll. Apparently there isnt much of one. Tolls once set, never go away. Bridges that have been paid off 40 years ago are still tolled. Apparently no Interstate Toll Bridge built since 1995 sports a toll under $3.50 with most in the $5 to $7 dollar range. There are a few outliers as high as $13. When you study the history, tolls rise simply because a state wants more money for other projects. If we sign up for tolling, be prepared to be gouged for the benefit of parts elsewhere: fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/tollpage/t1part1.cfm
