Im just getting home from the second Rites of Passage program graduation this weekend and Im feeling grateful! The hands on program helps the young men in the maximum security units at Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center learn the skills required to grow from being a boy to a man. The young men spoke from their hearts over these two days about deciding to utilize the teachings...and that is the key. There are plenty of services available for incarcerated youth to participate in ...but they dont add up to a hill of beans if there is no buy-in. I see the changes our kids are trying to make. Im with them every week along with an amazing, small but dedicated core of volunteers. You can actually see it in the young men when they accept what is theirs to do. They smile a lot... they walk taller...they make eye contact and speak emotionally about things. Some of them sometimes fall...but they dont let failure overtake them. They get up and keep working. I am proud to know these young men. I am honored they let me in...
