Im just going to go out on a limb here: They do usually look as advertised. My opinion of what could have happened here is that the shop ran out of the special. Perhaps a child came in that really wanted a pumpkin decorated donut, and the store took a regular yeast ring out back and decorated it on the fly to try to make someone happy. As a regular crew member, sure theyre not going to have the same talent as the normal baker would, so OK, it came out a little wonky, but yes thanks for the effort! and not in the sarcastic way. Just something to think about.
