Im kind of disappointed at the reaction Ive been seeing to the results of the Mississippi Senate runoff. Six term Senator Thad Cochran defeated Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel by a small margin, one that is less than the estimated number of Democrats who crossed over to vote in the GOP runoff. Much of the angst of the McDaniel supporters appears to come from the Cochran campaigns effort to solicit those Democratic votes. keep in mind that soliciting crossover votes is perfectly legal in MS, just as it is in Georgia. Tea Party supporters point to a flyer that was reportedly handed out to some Democratic voters of color, claiming the Tea Party wanted to suppress the minority vote. Yet, we dont know who produced that flyer. Lots of crap goes out in the heat of an election, especially a runoff. In the 10th district, weve seen a video accusing one side of stealing signs. In the eleventh, one side accuses the other of misrepresenting the candidates military service. In the Senate race, David Perdue has rolled out 22years talking about Jack Kingstons voting record and his long tenure. For its part, the Kingston campaign has phonyperdue, a Buzzfeed-like site calling out alleged deficiencies of the rookie Senate candidate. My point is that all candidates do stuff like this. But its the Tea Party folks who swear they would rather vote for the Democrat in the Mississippi Senate race than for Thad Cochran, the Republican. Or, they will donate to the Democrat. Or they claim the Cochran campaign has sh*t on the base. Most of you know that I am volunteering for Jack Kingston in the GOP Senate runoff. Yet, Ive already told David Perdue Political Director Austin Chambers that if after waking up on July 23rd I find that David is our Republican nominee, Ill be the first in line to offer support. This revenge against the primary winner attitude from some McDaniel supporters is what bothers me the most. Republicans need to understand that if we all can get along 70% with each other, we can move the country to the right, slowly but surely. And that has to be the ultimate goal.
