Im listening to a gaggle of Korean housewives converse with each other in English after our level tests for the upcoming semester and its interesting to hear all the underhanded digs they direct towards one another. So and sos daughter studies in the US and another student comments that it must be a great financial burden on her family. Another woman spent some time in Columbia and her classmates think Columbia is a dirty and unsafe place for a single Korean woman to be. One lady speaks English with a British accent and the others comment on how strange her accent sounds. My only thought besides jumping out of the nearest window is that its not a race to the bottom here, ladies. Youre all in the same place - housewives, living in the arm pit of a no name suburb on the outskirts of Seoul, bumming English lessons off the local government, in a desperate attempt to escape the doldrums and mediocrity of a life spent operating on whims of anothers choices instead of your own. Middle class Korean suburbia at its finest, where everyone is a self perceived winner and keeping up with and out doing the Kims is a necessary part of life.
