Im listening to a lot of iphone songs tonight that are personal to me, and in a very wistful mood, and I feel like chatting about them, so I apologize in advance for all these posts about weird songs youve probably never heard of. In the spring of 1986, I had quit my job in construction (I just didnt want to do it anymore), I was still living at home with my parents (God Bless my parents for putting up with me that LONG). My girlfriend at the time had broken up with me (cant blame her, especially now, looking back, I was completely lost about what I wanted to do with my life), and... ...this is the BIG ONE... one of my favorite bands at the time, KISS, had gone without make-up! The first half of 1986 was a VERY bad year. (I met Beth in the fall of 1986 after I took a job tending bar, so the 2nd half of 1986 became a GREAT year, but Im focusing on the 1st half for this post.) While all that was going on, I bought the Rod Stewart Absolutely Live cassette tape. Its a great compilation of all his songs, live especially (he was great live, I saw him in concert twice in the 80s). But in that horrible spring, this song especially, was one that I latched onto. Id drive all around Fairborn, OH, that cassette playing. Id focus on this song. Dont know why. Okay, yeah, I do. The lyrics had much more meaning to me then, of course. Simply put, I was lost at that point in my life, and this song helped me out, gave me some solace. In my life, at that time, I was sailing, in the middle of stormy waters, looking to find safe harbor. This song REALLY connected with me, and made me feel better. I listen to it now, today, and it makes me smile. Its a perfect example of how you can connect with an artist and forever follow them and forgive them for all the stupid crap they do (Rod has done some REALLY stupid stuff over the years).
