Im listening to an audio-book, set in Italy, and the characters speak to one another in Italian. The reader renders the conversations in English with a heavy, stereotyped Italian accent. The same thing is common in movies, and it occurs when the actual language is French, German, Spanish, and so on. Although the conversations are in the appropriate language, they are spoken in English with a heavy overlay of accent. Why? Poems, novels, scientific papers, and all other written translations are accomplished in appropriate, grammatically correct English, not phonetic forms reproducing (often comically inappropriate) accented English. I put this practice in the STUPID column.
