Im looking forward to the day... Im looking forward to the day when excellence in the black community is praised for the act and achievement of excellence, in and of itself, and not for the simple fact that its excellence coming from a black person. As if its some profound rarity that we too, are capable of surmounting personal adversities and achieving greatness. Im looking forward to the day this country decides to teach history in a much more inclusive manner where black folks are not portrayed as simply a lost people in this country as a result of capitalistic slave trades. Im looking forward to the day Where black history is not just devoted to the shortest month of the year and the contributions made by the minds of bright black men and women are given their just due and respect. Hell, Im looking forward to the day that Black history becomes just, History. Im looking forward to when the impact former enslaved Africans had on the building of this great American nation is not reduced to tales of whips and cotton picking. Hell, Im looking forward to that 40 acres and a mule. Though the richness of our culture may have been diluted through these books, movies etc, our roots run deep into Mother Earth. Im looking forward to the day when our kids are not taught that because hes white and because hes black and because his name is John and his name is Johntae, a little too black, white boy Johnny will probably get the job. Yes, these are the days that I fantasize about and look forward to as I lay in bed staring at my ceiling, or sit in class in the middle of February, drifting off during the lecture about white privilege that came right after the 3 minute Black History lesson. Yes America, these are the days I look forward to.
