Im mesmerized watching the 1992 Guy Maddin film Careful! - TopicsExpress

Im mesmerized watching the 1992 Guy Maddin film Careful! tonight.....I can warn you, it wont be many of my friends cup of tea....but wow, this guy is so odd and makes the most beautiful, moody and atmospheric films. In one sense theyre timeless -- he experiments with silent film techniques and old coloring techniques. His most famous flick is probably The Saddest Music in the World, which I love -- and I was fortunate to see a showing of a national tour of his film Brand Upon the Brain! at Chicagos Music Box Theatre in 2006 with a live orchestra, live Foley sound and live narration by Crispin Glover (Roger Ebert introduced the film that night, still looking healthy and just shortly before he went through the many cancer surgeries that rendered him unable to speak afterwards). I hadnt seen this very early film from his career until tonight, and I cant even completely explain why Im so hypnotized. His stuff is one-of-a-kind, it feels like it is 100 years old and yet brand new. Hes a twisted genius, not for the faint of heart, and every time I see one of his films, I always find myself saying Wow a few times during the experience. For those who check him out on my recommendation and hate his stuff (there will be more than a few) I apologize in advance. The few who jump on the bandwagon with me -- youre clearly a weirdo, and bless you: Im here if you need to talk. imdb/title/tt0103926/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_38
