Im new to this page, but my mothers family has been in central Florida since the 1800s. My grandfather Dave Gaffney was born in Green Pond in 1883 and used to drive cattle for Steve Hull from the Kissimmee Valley to Lakeland. The best story from that time concerns Mr. Hull getting drunk and winning a herd of mustang ponies in a poker game. My grandfather said the next morning he had to drive the horses as well as keep the very hungover Mr. Hull on his horse. Periodically the old man would fall out of his saddle, and while my grandfather was getting him back on, the wild horses would scatter. Then, by the time he had the horses moving again, Hull would fall off. Eventually he tied the man onto the horse and finished what he said was the longest trip of his life to Lakeland! A real Florida Cracker.
