Im not a big Nicholas Kristof fan (hes alright ...) but he had an interesting article in the NYT today on the role of academics in public policy disputes (nytimes/2014/02/16/opinion/sunday/kristof-professors-we-need-you.html?ref=opinion&_r=0). This sort of discussion is always timely in a college town like Norman. One point worth adding: some academics make themselves irrelevant; others have irrelevance thrust upon them. There is a fair amount of resistance to input from OU faculty members in Norman. Part of the problem is really cultural - academic & local political discourse each proceeds by different rules (a point that Joy Hampton occasionally presses on me). Part of the problem, however, is just resistance to having the boat rocked. If were doing things the way they are usually done, everyone is OK, regardless of whether it makes any sense.
