Im not a very religious person, so you can take these words with a large grain of salt. As an agnostic theist, I believe in a higher power, yet I have a problem with Black folks who rigidly subscribe to the idea that faith and trust can be a qualitative substitution for handling our collective problems head on. Im troubled by the idea that we should just let Jesus take the wheel when were suffering from mental health problems, trying to overcome a racist system or battling to end gang violence in our neighbourhoods. I love to see people who have an unshakable faith in God which propels them to do better everyday, but I wish some religious folks would stop telling folks to stop protesting and pick up a bible because that just sounds counterproductive to me. Maybe Im a complete idiot when it comes to religion, but isnt it possible to have faith AND take action at the same time?
