Im not quite sure what the government are hoping to achieve with the proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act. I dont believe the Liberal Party, as a collective, is racist in itself. Theyre too uncaring, unemotional. Their policies which can be described as racist are purely political, designed to appeal to the racist and bigot in the Australian public. The fact that these policies are even suggested reflects badly on us, the public. But this is not just attacking an easy target like asylum seekers, this is a quite major change to 20 year old legislation. And I dont think theyd go to that much trouble just to appease a few right wing columnists. I get the feeling theyre planning on something bigger to come. On the other hand, this has proven to be an incompetent government. Abbot made a very effective Opposition Leader (Im talking about his efficacy as a politician here, not an examination of his personality or policies,) but hes actually a poor Prime Minister. Something we should be thankful for. Given the same situation, Howard would have already achieved terrible things, but Abbot has so far hardly done anything, just talk about it. And hes not in control of his party like Howard was.
