Im not smart enough to figure out exactly why this is the goal, but I can feel its wrong. All comments, speeches, books, etc are made within a context, upon which they can be contrasted, understood, and judged. Teaching the Ghettysburgh Address with NO MENTION of te Civil War, why President Lincoln made the address, why he chose the specific words he did, etc, doesnt add value to what thevstudent learns. It limits it. It leaves it open to all kinds of misunderstandings. Common Core is off the mark. Thats not even addressing the commentators discussion about the mandate of the Federal Government to have any involvement whatsoever in classroom curriculum.
