Im not sure that as a white boy I have any place making these comments. But, all races and creeds have an important stake in the issue. I am celebrating Black History Month with a full heart, along with African American friends and all people of goodwill. It makes an important, no, critical, statement and raises consciousness and pride of all Gods creatures. But, it still infers that African American history has not yet attained the mainstream. It has not been seamlessly integrated into the larger reality of the American experience. What about the other eleven months? African American history must have its own autonomous presence because no one - note, no one - has yet come to perceive African American history as part of our, not their, master-story. A Black History Month is still desperately needed for everyones sake. It must be celebrated, until . . . Call me Utopian, but . . . until all citizens, particularly the majority, come to put all differences behind and celebrate the oneness our of history, our destiny, our unity as Gods children. One far greater and more visionary than I first proclaimed it: . . . we will be able to speed up that day when all of Gods children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants, and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, Free at last, Free at last, Great God a-mighty, We are free at last. [If I have offended anyone by these observations, please tell me, and I will immediately delete them from my page, for that was furthest from my intention.]
