Im not sure the pro vs cons question about self administration is exactly applicable. I think it depends so much on the individual that a pro to one might be a dangerous con to another. I would offer that first shaman had no shaman to guide or train him/her in the work. Some have the luxury of a guide, others have the luxury of being able to guide themselves in the ayahuasca space. I believe that I am one of the latter, not because of a regime of rigorous preparation, study or spiritual achievement or personal specialness but because I have a mental illness known as schizotypal personality disorder. While I have never suffered from delusions or mood disorders, being at the high-functioning end of the schizophrenia spectrum has made some aspects of navigating daily life in a neurotypical/sanist society challenging.
