Im not wishing to be a scare-monger but rather trying to draw some - TopicsExpress

Im not wishing to be a scare-monger but rather trying to draw some attention to the fact that, in my view, in general the measures currently being employed to tackle the current pandemic, Ebola, are woefully inadequate. The mapping on the attached Independent article shows the progression of cases and deaths since the first reports in March. independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/ebola-what-is-it-and-what-are-the-symptoms-these-are-the-questions-you-need-to-ask-about-the-outbreak-9780260.html The next article suggests that perhaps a Spanish hospital was insufficiently responsive in dealing with a nurse who had cared for a deceased priest and subsequently presented with symptoms that should have set off alarm bells instantly. theguardian/world/2014/oct/08/spanish-ebola-nurse-symptoms-quarantine This brings to mind the devastating effects of the Foot & Mouth epidemic in 2001 because initial preventative action was not taken in this country. In Ireland, the impact was severely curtailed by the immediate introduction of disinfected matting at all entrance points to the country and public buildings, the postponement of matches and other large social gatherings (including St Patricks Day celebrations) where the disease could have spread and households and businesses taking similar precautions. It was understood that this was a short-term but urgent necessity to prevent a long term and devastating economic and social impact on a country that relies to a considerable degree on its agricultural exports as part of its GDP. The result of this early action was that the impact of Foot & Mouth was considerably less than in the UK where such action was delayed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_United_Kingdom_foot-and-mouth_outbreak We now have a disease raging that has the potential to decimate populations in the way the Black Death did and, in my opinion, already there is a lag in visible action on the part of nations that should know better. Surely it is more sensible by far to take immediate and drastic but ultimately short-term and less costly measures now as prevention rather than waiting to see what happens and listening to, again in my opinion, vested interests of those who only see the impact on monetary, business and tourism interests rather than on a massive human scale. Rather than just demonstrate the doom and gloom scenario, the final link shows what can be achieved in the fight against this deadly virus with early and effective action, and not in a highly technologically advanced Western nation, but by a pro-active and intelligent Guinean district hospital director and his staff. Food for thought. who.int/features/2014/telimele-ebola-free/en/
