Im noticing a trend where the societal ideal of a thing has drifted one way, and the actuality has drifted the other way, perhaps in response to the ideal becoming less attainable. I thought of this when I saw Telaina Eriksens link to an article about how parenting used to be considered successful if your children werent dead at the end of the day, but now weve got tigers, helicopters and attachers telling us that were not doing enough. And yet, the reality that I see and experience every day is that most parents feel guilty about not having enough time to spend with their kids because they have to work. Similarly, even the most casual of glances through a fashion magazine shows models whose joints are the most curvaceous parts of their bodies, and yet obesity in our society runs rampant. Our society is held up as the most innovative, the most creative in the world, and yet were spending less than any other country on our educational infrastructure, turning out children who arent even prepared for our own university system. Having a high income is seen as a virtue - if you cant pay for your own health insurance, rent, food, etc., youre a bad person and a drain on our society, but the number of jobs below management level that pay a living wage is shrinking every year. How have we come to be a society that sets the bar so high that most of us dont even consider trying anymore? How can we get back to standards that are more in line with our own realities?
