Im often asked about what I see in what others perceive to be the more mundane birds. It is an interesting question and touches on the value of taking ourselves out of the typical comfort zone of scanning the world around us in the race to nowhere, and instead, looking deeply at things to find their nuance. It is one of the reasons I cherish birding so much as an escape from lifes insane pace. Of this mundanity, perhaps sparrows loom largest as a species of similar looking, small brown birds flitting about in apparent disarray. I admit; sparrows were one of the last birds I endeavoured to identify on my frequent birding hikes. Being small, well hidden in dense foliage and, in many cases, with only very subtle distinctions, they are a notoriously difficult species to properly ID. But, once you take on the challenge, once you begin to look intently on their differences, you find a variety of birds with remarkable beauty and distinction. It is an effort well worth the time it takes. This is a Savannah Sparrow. In my opinion one of the most beautiful sparrows coming through New Jersey this fall. I got lucky, this one decided to pose for the camera. Thats always a good day. Sharing permitted. Canon EOS 60D ¹⁄₂₅₀ sec at f/5.6 Lens: EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM @ 300 mm ISO: 200
